1 온 땅의 언어가 하나요 말이 하나였더라
처음에 세상에는 언어가 하나뿐이어서, 모두가 같은 말을 썼다.
Now the whole world had one language and a common speech.
2 이에 그들이 동방으로 옮기다가 시날 평지를 만나 거기 거류하며
사람들이 동쪽에서 이동하여 오다가, 시날 땅 한 들판에 이르러서, 거기에 자리를 잡았다.
As men moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.
3 서로 말하되 자, 벽돌을 만들어 견고히 굽자 하고 이에 벽돌로 돌을 대신하며 역청으로 진흙을 대신하고
그들은 서로 말하였다. "자, 벽돌을 빚어서, 단단히 구워내자." 사람들은 돌 대신에 벽돌을 쓰고, 흙 대신에 역청을 썼다.
They said to each other, "Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly." They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar.
4 또 말하되 자, 성읍과 탑을 건설하여 그 탑 꼭대기를 하늘에 닿게 하여 우리 이름을 내고 온 지면에 흩어짐을 면하자 하였더니
그들은 또 말하였다. "자, 도시를 세우고, 그 안에 탑을 쌓고서, 탑 꼭대기가 하늘에 닿게 하여, 우리의 이름을 날리고, 온 땅 위에 흩어지지 않게 하자."
Then they said, "Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves and not be scattered over the face of the whole earth."
5 여호와께서 사람들이 건설하는 그 성읍과 탑을 보려고 내려오셨더라
주님께서 사람들이 짓고 있는 도시와 탑을 보려고 내려오셨다.
But the LORD came down to see the city and the tower that the men were building.
6 여호와께서 이르시되 이 무리가 한 족속이요 언어도 하나이므로 이같이 시작하였으니 이후로는 그 하고자 하는 일을 막을 수 없으리로다
주님께서 말씀하셨다. "보아라, 만일 사람들이 같은 말을 쓰는 한 백성으로서, 이렇게 이런 일을 하기 시작하였으니, 이제 그들은, 하고자 하는 것은 무엇이든지, 하지 못할 일이 없을 것이다.
The LORD said, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.
7 자, 우리가 내려가서 거기서 그들의 언어를 혼잡하게 하여 그들이 서로 알아듣지 못하게 하자 하시고
자, 우리가 내려가서, 그들이 거기에서 하는 말을 뒤섞어서, 그들이 서로 알아듣지 못하게 하자."
Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other."
8 여호와께서 거기서 그들을 온 지면에 흩으셨으므로 그들이 그 도시를 건설하기를 그쳤더라
주님께서 거기에서 그들을 온 땅으로 흩으셨다. 그래서 그들은 도시 세우는 일을 그만두었다.
So the LORD scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city.
9 그러므로 그 이름을 바벨이라 하니 이는 여호와께서 거기서 온 땅의 언어를 혼잡하게 하셨음이니라 여호와께서 거기서 그들을 온 지면에 흩으셨더라
주님께서 거기에서 온 세상의 말을 뒤섞으셨다고 하여, 사람들은 그 곳의 이름을 바벨이라고 한다. 주님께서 거기에서 사람들을 온 땅에 흩으셨다.
That is why it was called Babel -because there the LORD confused the language of the whole world. From there the LORD scattered them over the face of the whole earth.
10 셈의 족보는 이러하니라 셈은 백 세 곧 홍수 후 이 년에 아르박삿을 낳았고
셈의 족보는 이러하다. 셈은, 홍수가 끝난 지 이 년 뒤, 백 살이 되었을 때에 아르박삿을 낳았다.
This is the account of Shem. Two years after the flood, when Shem was 100 years old, he became the father of Arphaxad.
11 아르박삿을 낳은 후에 오백 년을 지내며 자녀를 낳았으며
셈은 아르박삿을 낳은 뒤에, 오백 년을 더 살면서 아들딸을 낳았다.
And after he became the father of Arphaxad, Shem lived 500 years and had other sons and daughters.
12 아르박삿은 삼십오 세에 셀라를 낳았고
아르박삿은 서른다섯 살에 셀라를 낳았다.
When Arphaxad had lived 35 years, he became the father of Shelah.
13 셀라를 낳은 후에 사백삼 년을 지내며 자녀를 낳았으며
아르박삿은 셀라를 낳은 뒤에, 사백삼 년을 더 살면서 아들딸을 낳았다.
And after he became the father of Shelah, Arphaxad lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters.
14 셀라는 삼십 세에 에벨을 낳았고
셀라는 서른 살에 에벨을 낳았다.
When Shelah had lived 30 years, he became the father of Eber.
15 에벨을 낳은 후에 사백삼 년을 지내며 자녀를 낳았으며
셀라는 에벨을 낳은 뒤에, 사백삼 년을 더 살면서 아들딸을 낳았다.
And after he became the father of Eber, Shelah lived 403 years and had other sons and daughters.
16 에벨은 삼십사 세에 벨렉을 낳았고
에벨은 서른네 살에 벨렉을 낳았다.
When Eber had lived 34 years, he became the father of Peleg.
17 벨렉을 낳은 후에 사백삼십 년을 지내며 자녀를 낳았으며
에벨은 벨렉을 낳은 뒤에, 사백삼십 년을 더 살면서 아들딸을 낳았다.
And after he became the father of Peleg, Eber lived 430 years and had other sons and daughters.
18 벨렉은 삼십 세에 르우를 낳았고
벨렉은 서른 살에 르우를 낳았다.
When Peleg had lived 30 years, he became the father of Reu.
19 르우를 낳은 후에 이백구 년을 지내며 자녀를 낳았으며
벨렉은 르우를 낳은 뒤에, 이백구 년을 더 살면서 아들딸을 낳았다.
And after he became the father of Reu, Peleg lived 209 years and had other sons and daughters.
20 르우는 삼십이 세에 스룩을 낳았고
르우는 서른두 살에 스룩을 낳았다.
When Reu had lived 32 years, he became the father of Serug.
21 스룩을 낳은 후에 이백칠 년을 지내며 자녀를 낳았으며
르우는 스룩을 낳은 뒤에, 이백칠 년을 더 살면서 아들딸을 낳았다.
And after he became the father of Serug, Reu lived 207 years and had other sons and daughters.
22 스룩은 삼십 세에 나홀을 낳았고
스룩은 서른 살에 나홀을 낳았다.
When Serug had lived 30 years, he became the father of Nahor.
23 나홀을 낳은 후에 이백 년을 지내며 자녀를 낳았으며
스룩은 나홀을 낳은 뒤에, 이백 년을 더 살면서 아들딸을 낳았다.
And after he became the father of Nahor, Serug lived 200 years and had other sons and daughters.
24 나홀은 이십구 세에 데라를 낳았고
나홀은 스물아홉 살에 데라를 낳았다.
When Nahor had lived 29 years, he became the father of Terah.
25 데라를 낳은 후에 백십구 년을 지내며 자녀를 낳았으며
나홀은 데라를 낳은 뒤에, 백십구 년을 더 살면서 아들딸을 낳았다.
And after he became the father of Terah, Nahor lived 119 years and had other sons and daughters.
26 데라는 칠십 세에 아브람과 나홀과 하란을 낳았더라
데라는 일흔 살에 아브람과 나홀과 하란을 낳았다.
After Terah had lived 70 years, he became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran.
27 데라의 족보는 이러하니라 데라는 아브람과 나홀과 하란을 낳고 하란은 롯을 낳았으며
데라의 족보는 이러하다. 데라는 아브람과 나홀과 하란을 낳았다. 하란은 롯을 낳았다.
This is the account of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor and Haran. And Haran became the father of Lot.
28 하란은 그 아비 데라보다 먼저 고향 갈대아인의 우르에서 죽었더라
그러나 하란은 그가 태어난 땅 바빌로니아의 우르에서 아버지보다 먼저 죽었다.
While his father Terah was still alive, Haran died in Ur of the Chaldeans, in the land of his birth.
29 아브람과 나홀이 장가들었으니 아브람의 아내의 이름은 사래며 나홀의 아내의 이름은 밀가니 하란의 딸이요 하란은 밀가의 아버지이며 또 이스가의 아버지더라
아브람과 나홀이 아내를 맞아들였다. 아브람의 아내의 이름은 사래이고, 나홀의 아내의 이름은 밀가이다. 하란은 밀가와 이스가의 아버지이다.
Abram and Nahor both married. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife was Milcah; she was the daughter of Haran, the father of both Milcah and Iscah.
30 사래는 임신하지 못하므로 자식이 없었더라
사래는 임신을 하지 못하여서, 자식이 없었다.
Now Sarai was barren; she had no children.
31 데라가 그 아들 아브람과 하란의 아들인 그의 손자 롯과 그의 며느리 아브람의 아내 사래를 데리고 갈대아인의 우르를 떠나 가나안 땅으로 가고자 하더니 하란에 이르러 거기 거류하였으며
데라는, 아들 아브람과, 하란에게서 난 손자 롯과, 아들 아브람의 아내인 며느리 사래를 데리고, 가나안 땅으로 오려고 바빌로니아의 우르를 떠나서, 하란에 이르렀다. 그는 거기에다가 자리를 잡고 살았다.
Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and together they set out from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to Canaan. But when they came to Haran, they settled there.
32 데라는 나이가 이백오 세가 되어 하란에서 죽었더라
데라는 이백오 년을 살다가 하란에서 죽었다.
Terah lived 205 years, and he died in Haran.
